How RE Came to Be: The Story of Blair's Inspiration

Informational and self-regulation purposes only. Not a medical device.

A serene, quiet beach along the Coromandel peninsula in New Zealand

At a Glance

  • 01An adult AuDHD diagnosis at 40 provided the key to understanding why traditional top-down meditation had always felt like an impossible paradox.
  • 02Discovering bottom-up physiological regulation proved that giving the body a physical rhythm first allows the mind to settle naturally.
  • 03Frustration with mainstream wellness apps (streak anxiety, pushy notifications, AI hype, data tracking) led to building a tool on first principles.
  • 04RE was engineered as a bio-regulatory instrument: no gamification, strict client-side privacy, and clinical-grade PPG biometrics.

I sat on the sand at Coromandel, watching the Pacific waves roll into a steady rhythm. The coast was entirely still. My body, on the other hand, felt like a car engine pinned at 5,000 RPM in neutral. For most of my adult life, that contrast was my daily baseline: looking relaxed enough on the outside while my internal nervous system braced for a threat that was not there.

RE did not begin in a corporate boardroom or an incubator pitch session. It began as a practical necessity for my own health, built out of years of searching for tools that actually worked for a brain and body wired like mine.

01. The Exhale at 40: Retroactive Clarity

Getting diagnosed with AuDHD (Inattentive ADHD paired with Autism spectrum traits) in my early 40s was a strange cocktail of emotions. First came a deep sense of relief, the kind where you drop your shoulders and exhale a breath you did not realise you had been holding for twenty years.

Then came the retroactive clarity. I finally understood why traditional meditation instructions had always felt like a cruel joke. "Quiet your thoughts," "just sit with the breath," or "clear your mind." For an AuDHD nervous system, telling the brain to stop thinking is like telling a waterfall to stop falling. It creates immediate executive friction, piling self-blame on top of sensory overload.

Top-down vs. Bottom-up

Top-down approaches try to use conscious thought to control autonomic arousal. When your system is hyper-vigilant, that circuit is already compromised. Bottom-up approaches start with the body's mechanical hardware: blood pressure, heart rate, and diaphragmatic rhythm. When you change the physical signal coming up the vagus nerve, the brain accepts the data and down-regulates without an argument.

02. Accidental Hacks & The Science of Resonance

Long before my diagnosis, I had developed my own intuitive workarounds. I played deep brown noise through headphones to mask sensory distraction while working. Later, I stumbled into pacing my breath at equal 5.5-second intervals. I did not know the clinical terms back then; I simply knew it was the first thing that stopped my chest from feeling tight.

Years later, digging into the physiological literature, the pieces connected. Vaschillo's research on 0.1 Hz baroreflex resonance, Lehrer's clinical work on Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback, and Porges's Polyvagal Theory all pointed to the exact same biological truth. When you breathe at your personal resonant frequency, your heart rate and blood pressure sync into a single coherent wave.

The breath is the only part of the autonomic nervous system we can consciously control. It is the master switch. By giving the body a steady mechanical rhythm first, the mind is given permission to settle.

03. Bouncing Off Mainstream Apps

During stressful periods, I tried downloading popular mindfulness and habit apps. Almost every time, I uninstalled them within a fortnight.

The problem was how they were built. Red notification dots, streak counters warning me not to "break the chain," pushy reminders, and endless gamified badges. For a nervous system already dealing with burnout or executive fatigue, turning practice into a daily task list item creates more anxiety than it relieves.

Then came the wave of wellness AI: chatbots asking for personal journal entries, sycophantic virtual coaches, and algorithm trackers designed to harvest engagement metrics. I did not want a virtual assistant telling me how to feel. I wanted an instrument.

04. Building RE on First Principles

I decided to build what was missing: an uncompromised, privacy-first biofeedback instrument designed specifically for autonomic regulation. I stripped away every wellness trend that did not serve physiological function.

Objective Biometric Data

No questionnaires or subjective mood ratings. RE uses your smartphone camera lens or smartwatch to run 60-second camera PPG scans, giving you raw, clinical-grade HRV metrics (RMSSD, SDNN, Coherence) so you can verify your recovery objectively.

Deep Sensory Anchors

Harmonic Chime, Binaural Beats (Delta, Theta, Alpha), and three atmospheric soundscapes (Green, Pink, Brown noise) to anchor attention without cognitive load.

Privacy-First & Zero Gamification

No streak badges, no guilt, no ads, and no AI chatbots. Your biometric data is processed on your device and private backend, never sold or used for targeted profiling.

05. A Sanctuary for Your Body

RE is the tool I wished I had twenty years ago. It is built for anyone dealing with burnout, sensory overload, chronic stress, or for anyone who simply wants a quiet, scientifically grounded way to find calm.

You do not need to trick your mind or force yourself into stillness. Give your body the right physical rhythm, and let your nervous system do the rest.

"You are not tricking your mind. You are giving your body better data."

Experience the Sanctuary

Built for real nervous systems. Discover your resonant frequency and measure your recovery without streaks or distraction.
