A five-minute app-guided breathing session beat both a mindfulness body scan and silent sitting for HRV recovery after a stress task, in a study of working adults.
Breathing at resonance frequency, around six breaths a minute, measurably lowers blood pressure and lifts mood during a stress task, not just afterward.
The mechanism is the same vagal baroreflex a full RE session uses. A short session is not a lesser version of the practice, just a shorter dose.
A single session and a standing weekly practice are different claims with different evidence. Both are real; neither substitutes for the other.
The meeting does not stop for a twenty-minute session
Most of what gets written about breathwork assumes a quiet room and an open half hour. Most of a working day offers neither. Between one meeting ending and the next one starting, or in the ninety seconds before you have to sound calm on a call you are not calm about, the standard advice is close to useless. If the only tool that counts is the long session, the workday wins by default.
That framing turns out to be wrong, not because the long session does not matter, but because a short one does more than it gets credit for.
What five minutes actually does
Chelidoni and colleagues tested this directly. Seventy-five full-time employees were put through a laboratory stress task, then randomly assigned to one of three five-minute recovery conditions: a guided breathing session through an app, a mindfulness body scan, or silent sitting with no instruction.[1] Heart rate variability was tracked continuously through the whole sequence.
The breathing group recovered further than either of the other two. RMSSD, the primary marker of parasympathetic activity, was significantly higher in the breathing condition than in mindfulness or silence, and the same pattern held for high-frequency HRV power. Five minutes of paced breathing outperformed five minutes of body-scan meditation for the specific job of getting a stressed nervous system back to baseline.
That is not a claim that mindfulness does not work. It is a narrower and more useful claim: for the specific task of autonomic recovery in a short window, pacing the breath beat a practice that asks you to simply notice.
Why six breaths a minute, specifically
The rate matters more than the act of breathing slowly in general. Steffen and colleagues had participants breathe at their own measured resonance frequency, close to six breaths a minute, for fifteen minutes, then put them through an eight-minute stress task while still monitoring heart rate variability and blood pressure.[2] Against a control group that sat quietly instead, the resonance-frequency group reported better mood and ran a measurably lower systolic blood pressure during the stress task itself, not only in the recovery period afterward.
That rate is not arbitrary. Roughly 0.1 Hz is where breathing rhythm, heart rate oscillation, and blood pressure oscillation lock into phase, the mechanism covered in full in Coherent Breathing 101. A 2018 systematic review by Zaccaro and colleagues traced the physiology: slow breathing increases vagal afferent traffic to the brainstem, which raises baroreflex sensitivity and shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance.[3] That shift is available in a five-minute dose, not only a twenty-minute one, because it is a rate effect, not a duration effect.
How RE fits in
A full RE session and a five-minute one at your desk are using the same mechanism at different doses. The haptic and visual pacer holds 5.5 seconds in and 5.5 seconds out without you having to count, which is the part that is hardest to sustain accurately under time pressure. Between calls, that is the entire adjustment: shorter clock, same rhythm.
This compounds. It is not just a repeated trick
It is worth being precise about which claim the evidence supports, because two different things are true on two different timescales. The Steffen and Chelidoni results are acute: one session changes the physiology of the next stressful hour. Perciavalle and colleagues tested something else, a standing practice: university students did a weekly ninety-minute deep breathing session for ten weeks, compared with a no-treatment control.[4] By the end, the practice group showed lower resting heart rate and lower salivary cortisol than they started with.
Those are not the same study measuring the same thing twice. One is what a single session buys you in the next hour. The other is what ten weeks of practice buys you as a new baseline. Both are real, and neither one is evidence for the other. A five-minute session before a hard meeting is not pretending to be ten weeks of training. It does not need to be, to still be worth doing.
